PSalm 113 – Holy GOD

Psalm 113

1-3 Hallelujah! You who serve God, praise God!
Just to speak his name is praise!
Just to remember God is a blessing—
now and tomorrow and always.
From east to west, from dawn to dusk,
keep lifting all your praises to God!

4-9 God is higher than anything and anyone,
outshining everything you can see in the skies.
Who can compare with God, our God,
so majestically enthroned,
Surveying his magnificent
heavens and earth?
He picks up the poor from out of the dirt,
rescues the wretched who’ve been thrown out with the trash,
Seats them among the honored guests,
a place of honor among the brightest and best.
He gives childless couples a family,
gives them joy as the parents of children.

I love coffee! All of you reading just scratched your head . . . coffee? God? You know what coffee is so amazing, it’s so bold, strong, and full of fake energy!! I don’t understand the people that can drink the fake freeze-dried coffee out of a can. I need real beans that I can grind. And not that weird Robusta weed coffee, you see Robusta beans are used in most coffees especially cheap coffee. Robusta coffee is basically a weed coffee that grows anywhere under any circumstances. Instead I love the Arabica bean, this is the elite bean, the bean that only grows in three regions of the world: Latin America, Africa, and the Pacific Islands, and only in between certain longitudes in these regions. You have to have the right soil, the right sun, the right temperature, to get them. I love this bean.
Another thing I love is beer. I know a pastor you loves beer!! It’s ok really, theologians for centuries have been drinking beer, . . . up until that disaster of an era known as the prohibition. Anyway, I am no alcoholic, but I enjoy a beer with dinner or after a tiring day, or when I am hanging out with friends new and old. There is a historic and artful history to beer. But I only like a certain type of beer, Budweiser, Coors, Miller . . . umm that isn’t beer, it’s colored water with a little alcohol in it. I like beer that is not made in bulk like those, but beer that is made from art, from science, from methods tried and true for centuries, mainly imports, Irish, Scottich, British, German . . . I’m drooling!
Ok coffee and beer have something in common. They have two levels of existence, you have really good elite coffee that only a true coffee snob could appreciate, and then you have puke coffee, for the pansy coffee drinker (sorry if I offend you). With beer you have the delicious beer that is either brewed by breweries that have been around since before my great great grandfather, or the microbrewery, these two breweries brew real delicious artful and historic style beers, then you have the beer that is mass produced and cost almost nothing to buy because they makers know it sucks.
Ok here is the connection. Life is like beer and coffee. You have life, everyday hum drum life. This life is not exciting or fulfilled, this life is lacking, this is not the life anyone wants its the gross coffee or beer, the common. Then there is LIFE, LIFE with GOD*, a LIFE that is so utterly fulfilled that we don’t know what to do. GOD fulfills. Yes we may become disillusioned, yes we may be discouraged or fall. But GOD is there to pick us up. The last comparison I want to make is about the elements of the beverages.
Coffee has something called caffeine, with out it is useless. And Beer alcohol, without it it tastes . . . icky and is useless (not that we get drunk but it relaxes.) God is a super-natural caffeine and alcohol. He comes into our lives and gives us a super-natural energy, and an ability to be at ease, to be excited and calm about what life throws at you at the same time.

In the Psalm above the Psalmist calls us to as GODS* people to praise Him because with out Him there is nothing. That is the point, God is the secret ingredient in our life that makes it worth going through. But the main ingredient in GOD that makes it this way is Divinity. GOD is utterly and completely different than us, but he imparts that to us, and makes us more like him

* The all caps GOD means YHWH God’s true and perfect and full name, the most sacred name of God
