Psalm 4 (The Message)
A David Psalm
1 When I call, give me answers. God, take my side! Once, in a tight place, you gave me room;
Now I’m in trouble again: grace me! hear me!
2 You rabble—how long do I put up with your scorn?
How long will you lust after lies?
How long will you live crazed by illusion?
3 Look at this: look
Who got picked by God!
He listens the split second I call to him.
4-5 Complain if you must, but don’t lash out.
Keep your mouth shut, and let your heart do the talking.
Build your case before God and wait for his verdict.
6-7 Why is everyone hungry for more? “More, more,” they say.
I have God’s more-than-enough,
More joy in one ordinary day
7-8 Than they get in all their shopping sprees.
At day’s end I’m ready for sound sleep,
For you, God, have put my life back together.
It seems like David is calling out for help a lot that he is in trouble being pursued and harassed a lot. Well the fact of the matter is he was, some of it was because he was actually pursuing God, that he actually sought after God’s heart. And a few were because he screwed up. This Psalm depicts the violent nature in which David is being pursued, but we should also be able to identify with it, because it seems that the world is often trying to tear us down, trying to destroy our hope and our spirit. The scary thing is, that they have the power to do it. 1 person against the world doesn’t stand much of a chance. But 1 person with God against the world, well those odds just aren’t fair, even if God tied both hands behind his back and was blind folded (that brings a strange visual to mind, anyway). The last line is the most important I believe “At day’s end I’m ready for sound sleep, For You, God, have put my life back together.” Awesome. How many of us have rough days we get home and we are so tired that we just want to pass out, we can’t deal with anything else, but we can’t go to sleep, because we are so worried about tomorrow. God can restore us, God can give us rest, God can and will put your life back together, just call out to Him, He will hear your cry.
