Sacrifice as worship

American’s don’t like to sacrifice, we like to get rich and do it fast. Unfortunately if we are going to worship God we must sacrifice. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.” Romans 12:1. We can’t avoid it, it’s right there. What do we have to sacrifice? Everything, or preferences, our ego, our rights, our lives to God. It’s not easy, and it’ll take a lifetime to get it right. What else do we have to sacrifice? Well the first thing that normally comes to mind is our money. People always gripe on churches for asking for money. They really shouldn’t have too. The giving back of our income is part of this sacrifice. Some may argue that because we live under the new covenant free of the Law, that we don’t ned to ‘tithe’ back to the Church. Well the demonstration that we are modeling, the first time we see ‘tithing’ in the scriptures is with Abraham. Now if you know your scriptures, then you know that Abraham didn’t live under the Law, he lived before the law was given. God had this part of the Bible included for a reason, so that we would follow this example. Also, Paul commands that we give generously in  2 Cor. 9:12-13. So here is the real deal here. If we are to authentically and totally worship God, we must sacrifice, and this includes tithing. If you hold this part of your ‘worship’ back, then you have erected barriers in your worship, and it becomes less true, and we are commanded to worship in truth (John 4:24)
